About

Cool DAW for everyone.

Made by Petri Tuominen — software engineer, electronics tinkerer and lifelong music hobbyist.

Why I'm building it

I think there's a gap in the market: there isn't an excellent, free DAW for desktop computers that's genuinely enjoyable to use and easy to learn. Powerful music software tends to be expensive, intimidating, or both. SANDYNE is my attempt to close that gap — a complete studio you can open, understand, and make a real song in.

Where it comes from

The roots run deep. SANDYNE comes out of nearly three decades of software engineering and a long fascination with digital audio — including time spent in a university digital-audio research group here in Tampere.

The other half is hardware. Before this, I designed and built my own synthesizers — a monosynth and a polysynth — along with a hardware programmer for a vintage Roland synth, a MIDI retrofit for an early drum machine, and a development board for effect pedals. Repairing old tape echoes and harmonizers teaches you things about audio that no documentation does.

And I play and tinker with guitars, keyboards, drum machines, pedals, and making music, enough hours to know what gets in the way when you're trying to finish a song.

How it's possible

Software of this scope used to take a large team and a long runway. Modern AI tooling changes that math. I use AI extensively across the build, which is what makes it possible for one person to ship a studio this ambitious — and to give it away free while I find out whether it's something people genuinely want to use.

The goal

Honestly? To find out if I can make something that many people use and love. I'm still polishing SANDYNE, and it stays free as I do. If you try it and have thoughts — what works, what's confusing, what's missing — I'd love to hear from you.
